2016년, 서양 중심의 연대기와 문화사 기술에서 벗어나 한국 그리고 동양을 중심에 두고 ‘인간과 술’, 그리고 ‘우리술 문화’를 조명하려 한 <사단법인 우리술문화원 향음> 내 작은 모임에서 시작했습니다. 술학(Suul studies)은 아직까지 학계에서는 소외학문 분야에 속합니다. 그러나 이 분야의 연구는 언제나 즐겁고 유쾌합니다. 서양의 와인학에 비견할 우리 고유의 술학이 자리잡을 것을 꿈꾸는 까닭입니다.

우리는 반짝이는 별 하나의 발견보다 더, 눈부신 기술의 발전보다 더, 맛 있는 술 한잔을 빚는 일이 인류를 행복하게 해왔노라고 자부합니다. 우주과학 시대의 도래니, 과학기술의 발전이니 하는 말들은 오히려 인간의 시대를 강조하는 다른 말인 듯합니다. 이 술과 문화가 인류 문화유산으로서 술의 본래 모습을 되찾는 다리가 되기를 바랍니다.

The Society of Suul Studies, the publisher of this journal, began in 2016 as a small group within the Korea Suul Institute that aimed to move beyond Western-centered historical and cultural narratives and to foreground Korea and the East in exploring “humans and alcohol” and the culture of Suul. Suul Studies still remains a marginalized field within academia, yet research in this area has always been joyful and invigorating—for we aspire to establish our own indigenous scholarship of suul, comparable to Western oenology.

We take pride in believing that brewing a single cup of delightful suul has brought more happiness to humankind than discovering a star in the heavens or making dazzling technological advances. The so-called age of space science and the rise of scientific–technological civilization, in our view, are merely other ways of reaffirming the age of the human. We hope that this journal becomes a bridge that restores alcohol to its original place as part of humanity’s intangible cultural heritage.
